carpet stain

we have a couple of nasty stains appear on our white carpet, aargh! it looks like oil / tar of some kind. WE have tried washing up liquid but it has made it worse. Anyone know any safe, handy tips for this one?

If it is oil or tar try petrol (in an inconspicuous place first)

thanks guys, i have actually now tried a stain remover spray from B and Q, and it is much better, thouigh one area is a little bleached!
