I looked at your Thames Lab article, Ratteris. Notice that it is the asbestos removal industry that is opposing the deletion of 'artex' from the list of materials requirring special handling. Why? - vested interest IMHO.
This asbestos business is a bit like the nuclear debate - you can't see it and most people don't understand it so all things with the word 'nuclear' in them must be dangerous.
Any asbestos in pre-1999 artex is embodied in the material. It will only ever be an issue if the householder starts sanding it down.

The use of asbestos was banned in Artex and many other products in 1980.

As I 'have a go at anything round the house' type person, I find it quite frightening that there is asbestos in things that aren't obvious. I didn't know it was in artex. I also found out that the drain pipes outside my house are made of asbestos. What else for goodness sake?

Old brake pads on cars, those little pads that used to sit under the iron on the ironing board. But don't forget, the stuff is only a problem if you stir it up and dust flies.

And some old pipe/tank lagging and old boilers contains asbestos aswell. Also the older type corragated garage roofs.
