How can I protect my fish in a 70sq.ft pond from a heron without putting a net over the water?

I found that tying a string about 2" back from the edge of the pond very effective as the herons cannot then stand at the waters edge and watch for fish. Less obtrusive than a net.

Put a net over the heron. Lay thick sheets of MDF over the pond. Take the fish out of the pond & keep them in the bath.

Have you tried a fake heron? Plastic ones are available from most garden centres / aquarium centres? As Herons are territorial (apparently!) this acts as a deterrent to any other birds.
