How can you repair brick work where the face of the brick has become worn or damaged by age

the individual brick is removed and replaced. It's not exactly rocket science, but i for one wouldn't tackle it - best get a builder in.
Yes, making it look as if it hadn't ever happened generally takes a brickies skill.
You may be able to reduce the cost by sourcing yourself the few bricks it will need - this would be a pain to a brickie. Then just pay him for the labour.
