How do I dispose of this cabinet?

We hear a lot about recycling these days, but how do I dispose of a surplus item of furniture - a good cupboard/ cocktail cabinet about 5' 6" high? Two furniture charities say nobody wants that sort of thing. I'd have to accept it back if it didn't sell at auction and house clearance people want about 70 to 'dump' it. Seems I shall have to take a hammer to it and break it up for bonfire night. Does anyone else have that sort of problem? Grateful for any suggestions (Sussex).

get in contact with the british heart fountain or similiar chartity they will collect ur items and sell them in there shop
Put a card in the window of the local shop..."china cabinet, free to anyone who can collect"
Furniture Now is a Sussex based charity and will take most furniture ,they have a branch in Eastbourne and one in the Brighton area . The Salvation Army will also collect unwanted items . I have recently given F.N. a china cabinet which was 60's style and they said it was an item that people always want . Hope this helps .
Unfortunately, not every Charity has the room in a local shop for furniture or the driver to collect. Does your area have the Freecycle service on the Internet - that's pretty good. There's always EBay of course or something similar online - retro furniture is in demand & if I lived nearer I'd be around with my purse straightaway.
If you dont manage to sell it your local council will do a special uplift, charges vary from council to council but some are free, and i think all are free if its in the name/address of a pensioner!

You are all being most helpful, thank you. It will take a few days, into next week, to follow up all the lines you have suggested. I tried Furniture Now who said there was no call for that sort of thing and they couldn't give them away! I agree space in shops is a factor. Ethel, I've never used Ebay but will explore the lines you suggest. My local council I haven't tried yet but will enquire a.s.a.p. Having been told by a house clearance firm that they would charge about 70 (60 = VAT) for dumping it, I'm prepared to pay to have it taken away, but not 70!! Looks as though I'm going to be very busy for the next few days going through these suggestions. Again, many thanks.

Hope this works! I've just tried to put a picture of it on the internet: http://www.nwlewes.ukpc.net/cabinet/
If left click doesn't open it, try right click > open
Here is the info on Freecycle groups in the South East...

I went in to the Salvation Army shop in Eastbourne recently and they had the same type of unit in there, also they give furniture to people who are on benefits etc . not my type of thing but would be glad of it if I had nothing .
Ring up your local Age Concern. They may have 4 or 5 different charities that collect items which they sell in there shops to raise some charity money.
try your local womens hostel. apparently they are always crying out for furniture etc. these women leave violent relationships with their kids and nothing else just to find safety. anything donated is gratefully received.
good luck
The Refuse/Recycling Department of your local Council may be prepared to take it away. Ours will take up to five items of furniture for 27.50, so you might want to get together with some neighbours to see if they've got anything they want to get rid of and share the cost.
