Make sure when you fertilize the garden it doesn't seep into the pond. To get rid of most of it, first phisically scoop out as much as you can with a stick (or grass rake is quite good), then add some barley straw (available at some garden centres). This produces a chemical when breaking down that the blanket weed doesn't like. Then make sure you have oxidizing plants in your pond such as canadian pond weed or similar, and surface plants such as water lilies to cut down the sunlight getting into the water.Good luck
proabalbly the best way is with a UV filter on the line from your pump to the main filter (assuming you have one). It is also recommended that you change the bulb every year for full effect. I've had mine three years now and blanket weed is beginning to appear. UV filter also gets rid of "green" water which is also algae based.
a UV filter will only clear pea soup water as the blanket weed does not actually pass through the filter. Chemicals can be purchased but most of these are dyes to block out the sunlight and so ruin the look of the pond and as soon as the dye clears the blanket weed grows again, the best way is to grow lots of plants in the pond, ie, lillies and oxygenators (these feed off the same nutrients that blanket weed feed off and also prevent sunlight getting to the blanket weed) This is the best long term solution, you will find that blanket weed spores are airborne and so it will grow wherever conditions are right for it
