Cleaning jewelery

Rather than buy expensive cleaner, is there any household items i can use to clean gold or silver jewelery please?

Hi gin is a good cleaner just soak the pieces for a while failing that a bit of washing up liquid in water for the silver bits what about household silver polish,obviously be careful with gems that are set in.

Oh just a thought if you use silver polish just rinse the items after
