argos and ikea both sell matresses separately. beware ikea mattress sizes though as they are different to UK sizes so you would need an ikea bedframe for a perfect fit.
you get what you pay for on a matress get a memory foam or tempur excellent.

We have dunped our old pocket sprung mattress and got a memory foam mattress from - http://www.trusleep.com/?gclid=CKGPnZqvj5ACFQ9 jQgodEzRzuQ.

We would never go back to a matress with springs in it.
I agree with the other two posters, memory foam are really comfortable. Harveys Sleepmaster is where we got ours from, and they were quite reasonably priced. Did I say they were comfortable- no more cricky necks!
