Clover is very beneficial to a lawn as it supplies nitrogen and therefore feeds your grass. It also attracts bees and butterflies.
Clover spreads by seeds, so I'd suggest you mow the lawn when the clover is flowering & dispose of the mowings carefully. You could also try feeding your lawn so that the grass can compete more successfully with the clover.
I don't think there is any way to eradicate it completely.
There are specific weed killers for clovers. Find them on Google. But I find Verdone is good enough. It'll tackle many weeds, though for clover, a couple of applications are needed. Did the trick.
If you don't have a vast amount, there is a spray called Clovatox which works very effectively. Stubborn patches may need a second spraying. Be sure to spray on a day when there is no wind to avoid neighbouring plants being damaged by the mist.
