Finding out the Tog rating of a duvet

We have a duvet on a guest bed but there's no label on it saying what tog rating it is and I'm blessed if I can remember what it was when I bought it. Is there any way I can find out? i.e. do duvets have a specific weight for the single, double & king size for each recognised Tog rating? Thanks.

Hi,
It all depends on what the quilt is filled with. Hollowfibre quilts are thinner and lighter than natural quilts but can have a higher tog rating. There is a device to measure the thermal insulation properties of a quilt (called a tog meter) but these are usually for the manufacturing trade rather than the consumer. There is more info on the rating system here but none that provide you with an answer to your question.

Thanks. It's just that one guest mentioned the felt a little chilly in bed on one night and another one on a different occasion said they were quite hot. We were wondering whether we needed to change the duvet for a different tog rating, but with these comments I suspect it might be down to individual metabolisms. . Think it was probably about 10.5 (Hollowfibre) which seems to be an average tog rating.. What ratings do other people feel comfortable with? .
It depends on the person who sleeps in the bed and what time of year it is and the weather. Rather than get rid of it, buy another one and put it over it as I do. Its a good idea for winter for cold blooded people like me. My husband normally chucks his top duvet off onto my side.

I have noticed they come in different thicknesses too so you cannot guess by feeling them.
In winter I use a quilted throw over the top of my duvet.
It doubles the warmth and can just be removed if you or your guest become too warm.
I keep mine on all winter, and its lovely and cosy.
