We are doing up a house that has a downstairs toilet to which the door has been previously removed.
The opening is only 24" wide instead of the normal 36" and so there isn't enough room for a single door to be put on.
The two choices we have are either a concertina door or a bi-fold door... Could you let me know your preference as this debate has gone on for too long!
The house will be rented out and we are on a budget - just to provide context!
I have chosen to have a bi fold to the bathroom in my fixer upper. Not because the door opening is too small but the room is 'snug' . Fitting a bi fold makes getting in and using it easier and the room feel a little larger.
A normal internal door opening is usually 30" not 36". Your problem is the 24" opening. You may find you either have to have the concertina option or have a door made.
If you go to a proper builders yard or joiners suppliers you will be able to get a 24" door. We needed a 24" door in our house and were able to get one from a local joinery supplier. It is solid wood 6 panel and matches all the other doors in the house. They had to order it and it cost about 15 more than the standard size , but the cheaper alternatives like the concertina and the bi folds are just plain nasty. But if I HAD to choose between those two I would opt for the bi-fold. The concertinas are just awful and I would not want to rent a house with one of those.
Traditional standard door sizes are - 15", 18", 21",24", 27"(normal for a bathroom) 30" standard for most rooms and 33" for bit more room. I wouldn't put smaller than a 24" door on a WC/cloakroom. All heights are standard 6' 6". And of course there are always metric doors which give you more in-between sizes.
