what can i do to stop worms turning my lawn into a mud patch over the winter?

But really worms aerate the soil and pull leaves down into it during autumn and winter, which adds humus. The casts they leave behind shouldnt be a problem, unless you are walking over them.......which you should not do if the ground is wet. Worms are such beneficial creatures around the garden that it would be churlish to slaughter them. You can try to get them to come to the surface (tapping, or dilute washing up liquid does the trick), collect them and use them in a wormery compost maker...
It is NOT the worms that are causing your mud problem - they just like it! The mud is caused by poor drainage. For perfect solution you should remove the top foot of soil and put in a layer of course rubble, but regular prodding with a fork will help. A scarifier will help to dry it out in dry weather.
