I have a small front garden and about 30 odd pots. How much per hour would a jobbing gardener charge to do a tidy up and plant some spring pansies?

Anywhere between 8 and 15 an hour depending on who you got. 10 an hour is a reasonable rate to expect to pay.

I'm from East Sussex too (Lewes) so not a bad guess...and i'm a gardener !!!
I dont like 'hourly rates' - how do you know what you are going to get for your money? Why not set out what you want and get a firm price - that's how we would work on a job like this - payment on completion, when you are happy. Too many 'jobbing gardeners' tootle around stretching their time out for my liking - present company excepted of course, Hammerman!
Ooops sorry H'man, should have read that first - didnt mean to infer you're a 'jobbing gardener'.
no worries landscaper....i don't usually do private work unless someone is desperate.
