Hi, I 've got this annoying weed running inbetween my plants. It's leaves look a bit like nettles. I can't just pull it up as the roots run under the ground like crazy! Does anyone know what it is and how I can get rid of it without killing my existing plants??
Ground elder maybe? If so, almost imposible to eradicate by digging out when among other plants. A touch weedkiller (Roundup again!) will eventually kill the roots through the foliage. Now is a good time and you must be one stage more persistent than this very persitent weed! http://www.dgsgardening.btinternet.co.uk/groun d-elder.htm
Your weed sounds very much to me to be the "king " of all weeds - the dreaded groung elder!!!! or bishop weed, as it can be called. This weed requires great patience to eradicate. When digging out be careful not to leave any root as the smallest piece will grow into another plant!!!! It is extremely successful from root cuttings!!!!! On NO account compost it.,as it will grow even stronger in the compost heap!!!! Very best wishes. egrow. www.egrow.co.uk
I took over an allotment last year, & it had every weed known to the common man, including ground elder. I covered the affected areas with carpet & left it for a year, & it's worked! I've dug it over & couldn't find a trace of any roots. So I've planted it with 80 potato tubers & crossed my fingers.
