I am training a wisteria as a standard. It has about a foot of 'woody' stem and a further four foot of new green stem. It is growing up a five foot cane. It is already past the top of the cane and growing rapidly! Do i still have to wait til the winter to cut it back or do I have to let it go mad for the summer?

Never heard of such a thing.......`.Pah`.....Whatever next. .....A standard Wisteria???? humph....tut tut & tut.
My first reaction was rather like that of shylock73 but not as eloquent!
On further thought I still agree but if you have nothing much else to look after you can devote your time to trying to tame it.
I look forward to reading about your efforts sometime in a article devoted to "lost causes".
to shylock and nonomaybe ... there are several places you can buy standard wisterias now... the trouble is they are not cheap.. the last one I priced was 99.00 they look like mini weeping willows...So much for lost causes ...nothing is impossible now..
