i thought about doing that myself when my mum got a brand of litter that her cat didnt like but i had visions of him going outside and using the litter out there. also had visions of it clumping when it rained so ended up mixing the litter with the litter he did like using and he never noticed.
No

"Never place used cat litter in your fruit and vegetable gardens, as it may contain dangerous bacteria."

I also thought they would use it in the garden - but when I dumped some after the builders had left & I didn't really have a garden, hoping that they would get the message they didn't & still use the tray indoors, now I have a garden I am quite happy with that!
i have quite a large garden but my lovely cat still comes indoors to use the toilet, creatures of habit?
my mums cat never goes out all winter and has to be a really warm day for him to venture out at this time of the year and even then he'll come back in and use his tray, and when he does poop outside he will do it on my nice fresh flower beds....argh!!.....................
well well so you can use it outside..you learn something new every day.

My cats use the garden as their toilet and it doesn't seem to have any effect on the plants. In fact I currently have a jungle out there that needs dealing with.
same as my mums garden tiggerblue, i was clearing away some undergrowth last week in fear and trembling of what i might find, i thinking of holding a grdening party, bring your own gloves and secateurs (excuse spelling) and i'll provid the bags for the garden rubbish, might even stretch to a bottle of something cold..
typings all up the spout..its the sunny day calling me..
to madaboutcats, ie: spelling. If you have a Google bar at the top of your screen there is an ABC Check with a green tick which you could use to clk on to check your spelling before submitting your posts. We all make the occasional error when we try to type too fassssssssssttttt For the benefit of others who read this. Click on ABC Check, your post goes blue with any mistakes in red, click on the word and correct it, click on anywhere in the window and click on `Stop spell checking window` Hope that helps illiterates, Bad spelling can be avoided nowadays.
Or if you use Firefox the misspelt word has a red underline automatically.

Right click and a list of alternatives with the correct spellings appears.
Spare a thought for us. As a boarding cattery we use about 3 cwt a fortnight in the busy periods. We pay for a special collection by the council, I would love to find an alternative use for left-over (clean) litter.
its not so much my spelling shylock its the typing too fast and sometimes this keyboard plays up and you really have to tap the keys for it to register, and i dont often notice until after i've submitted.
Further to my previous answer, there is a wood based litter which clumps very well when wet called "Cats Best Okoplus".
The rep assures me that this can be put straight on the compost heap, where it will break down into compost.
More expensive than clay type litter, but very economical as you only clear out a couple of clumps per day.
