well for best energy saving turn off of course..

However if you switch you monitor off and make sure all the power saving options are turned on then a PC uses minimal energy overnight.
Dunno about energy, but if you aren't using it (or likely to for a few hours) what is the point of keeping it on.

Mine is on all day when I'm likely to use it, but off otherwise. I can wait a minute or so fror the restart.

Even when your PC is switched off the power pack still takes power so when you push the 'on' button on the front it starts up, so the best bet is to unplug it from the wall to save the most power....
Or get rid of the computer ...... that way you'll save loads of power ......

Only joking!
A peripheral consideration here is that most hardware failures occur at power-on/off. Modern disk drives will spin happily day-in day-out for years. I run my home pc all day even if I am out. My work pc is never shut down because I frequently need access from home. It has been fine, apart from planned re-boots, for 2 years.
