HI all, I have decided to re landscape my garden and want some railway sleepers to create raised beds. Does anyone know how I can get hold of them, ideally for free, of not, an idea of how much I could expect to spend ? Thanks in advance .
If it is anything like telegraph poles, you will find the elf and safety facists have got there first.
I work for BT, and we used to dipose of old poles from a cental depot in Birmingham - anyone who wanted could collect them for free with the proviso that they were not used for construction, and that playground apparatus was not constructed from them because the chemical used to treat the wood is poisonous.
Now, they have to be disposed of, and cannot be given away to the public - I think it is safe to assume that sleepers will be subject to the same rules for the same reasons - but that's just a guess.
I'm a train driver, Sleepers are made out of 'Jarrow Wood', and will last almost for ever,
The best way to get them, is to find a railway depot, as they are now replacing them with concrete ones, you will only pay a minimal fee, but you;d have to supply your own transport.
You can bet your life, the ebay sellers are railway workers.
