What is the best plant to have?

I am thing of putting a row of trees/bushes along my fence but i need them to grow quite high, quite quickly. The fence is only about 4 feet high and ideally i would like it to grow to about 6 feet high to allow me some privacy in my garden. I don't want a fern tree i would prefer something abit prettier. I also don't really want it to grow to far out as there is a pathway there. Ideas for be appreciated. thanks

why dont you put up taller fence panels i.e 6foot

green or purple beech? you can keep it well pruned so that it doesn't it doesn't take up too much room. It's deciduous but the brown leaves persist over winter time.

Thanks for your answers. devon dave its not my fence to replace and didn't want to offend the neighbours so i thought that would be the next best option.
