If you are n the habit of putting a wash on and going out, then that might be it. You have to get the washing out of the machine pronto when the cycle has finished in hot weather.
If the drum is pongy either run a cycle with nothing in but some laundry liquid or powder, or even a little household bleach, just to scour out the gubbins.

bacteria build up in the machine! it's caused because of the recent increase in use of colour type bleach free liquids and tablets instead of old style washing powder and a decrease in washing temperatures.
to stop it happening 1) make sure you leave the door open a little between washes. 2) get your self a box of old style biological washing powder and once a month run a quick high temp cycle with no washing in the machine using the powder, this will clean the inside of the machine out and kill any bacteria thats lurking in the machine.
