pruning

can anyone tell me when you can hard prune a tree want to limit it's hight

tree is a silver birch

Try and be a little sympathetic as the Silver Birch doesnt respond well to hard pruning. The graceful shape will be lost and replaced by vigorous shapeless new growth. If its possible go lightly and retain some shape to the tree

.....sorry peddie - forgot to answer your question! Prune when the tree is dormant ie end Nov to early March.
