When did Buttercups turn evil?

I've just been out to a part of the garden I can't see from the house - a sort of rockery where I had the usual plants with some shrubs behind. And all my "snow in summer" has been killed by a huge mass of buttercups!! They're enormous and everywhere.... but no flowers. Obviously I'll be digging them up where I can, but I haven't had this problem before, and the snow in summer's been there for at least fifteen years. Is this common?

Is it creeping buttercup? It can be a real problem.

No, thank goodness! These buttercups are really tall, and I think they've survived early death by disguising themselves as geraniums when the leaves were smaller. I've looked on t'internet and it looks as though it might be because the soil there has been so wet this year, and the drainage is poor. I've resigned myself to a back-breaking fiddly digging session. Thanks for the interest though spudqueen.
