I don't know the cause, but for a remedy, try 'Yellow Sulphur'. should be able to buy it from a Garden Centre.

Sorry, my error. aeration. thanks `Spocky` One of those words I have never spelt before.

Not sure what has caused your mildew but a fungicide will soon cure it. Ask at your local garden centre for the proper one.
