I think I have a squirrel in my loft. You cant see it but you can hear it scratching about. Any idea on how to get rid of it.

Could just be mice you have. For a squirrel to get inside, you must have quite a big gap somewhere. I have mice in my loft and they sometimes sound huge. You need to get up there and look for droppings etc to determine exactly what you have before you plan how to get rid of them.

You can buy squirrel traps from a farm supplies store if you live in a rural area or you can adapt a rat trap .They trap the squirrel live and it is up to you what you do with it but make sure you tie a rope or chain to the outside of the trap and lift the trap by the rope when you have caught the animal as a caged sqiurrel is a vicious beast

It could be birds you are hearing. If it is a squirrel then it may be a protected species, I know red squirels are.

Its probably a grey squirrel (not protected), the red ones are very rare apparently. They can do a fair bit of damage up there - if you have any wiring up there you should get rid, but if you get someone / council in to get rid - they might poison it ....

Hi Netty, Whatever it is, you not only need to get it out of there, but you need to have ALL and EVERY INCH OF ELECTRIC WIRE INSPECTED!! Neighbors of ours had squirrels in their attic and removed them. Two years later the house caught on fire in the attic and destroyed half the house. Had it not been for smoke detectors, the family would have perished, as the fire started in the middle of the night. It took two years for the wires to heat enough to cause the fire. The fire department determined it was from the squirrels chewing on the insulation that covers the wires. Mice will do the same thing. Newt
