i have a wool rug that keeps shedding and making a real mess, is there anything that can be done to stop this happening apart from getting rid of rug?

Just walking on it will eventually help mat the fibres together, though this could take a while. Leave it for a while where there's most foot traffic in the house. Otherwise, there's not much you can do
