Avacado plant?

I heard that you can grow a plant from the stone in an Avacado. Is this true and if so how should I go about it?

I've seen this done the following way: Pierce the seed near the pointed end with 4 toothpicks evenly spaced around the nut. You should have a seed/nut with the four toothpicks sticking out and inch or two. Then the nut is suspended over a container of water (usually a drinking glass or equivalent) using the toothpicks to hold it in place. The water should barely touch the pointed end of the nut. Keep the water replaced as it evaporates. In several days there should be a sprout appear at the top end. I hope I've given an appropriate word picture.

You can just plant the stone in a pot and keep it watered. Pointy end up, and if the brownish skin is loose, take it off first. The other way (suspended over a jar) works too, but the roots can be quite fragile when you come to plant it. Unfortunately they usually die after a year or two from the cramped conditions in a pot, and lack of enough light indoors. I have one I planted in about 1980 and have managed to keep it alive so far -- it's now about 6 ft tall, but would be a tree with fruit by now if in the ground. It was an excellent avocado, I remember.
