what size loft tank would I need to feed a standard hot water cylinder

The bigger the better. Make sure it fits through the trap door.

25 gallonshould be enough.

Seriously the more head of water the better, sometimes its a good idea to couple two together.
hi bugler i was told it depended on the purpose. i have a 25 gallon tank (20 x20 x27 ins since you ask ) but because i want a mixer shower with a pump for my bathroom update i need to have a 50 gallon cistern as the shower uses water like theres no tomorrow. god only knows how i will support it in the loft
Hi bugler Id go along with Doc the bigger the better x2 tanks in tandem with at least x2 28 mm coupling pipes between them if you intend to have a power shower.
But note that the pressure of head comes from the height above rose outlet for a gravity fed shower not the size, obviously the higher the better and yes a dedicated platform would have to be constructed onto proper bearing beams preferably set across bed room walls for added strength hth Tez
