neighbours cats keep coming in our garden and doing their business,I understand that there is a plant that will discourage them.Does anyone know what it is called?
well ur lucky its in ur garden over the summer i left kitchen window open and the cat came in knocked my brand new dinner service off the side and peed everywhere. my neighbour still wont pay up and i got the bloody thing on my phone in my kitchen sat on the unit
my niece went to the local country park and cut some branches of gorse and has put that round the flower beds. it seems to have done the trick, it's not the smell of the gorse, it's the prickles which have put the cat off.
If you are able to get hold of holly leaves, perhaps there will be some nearer to Christmas, and place around the base of plants that will help. The spray mentioned does work, but can work out to be expensive, as in my experience it is only effective for a short time. I can sympathise with your problem, it seems to be a growing one.
If you can obtain a kids water pistol, just try a few times to watch out for the cat (or cats) coming into your garden, then spray the water at them. It will only take a few times, and they'll soon find somewhere else to visit. They soon get the message. It's not cruel, and it doesn't hurt them, it only offends their dignity.
The plant you mean is Coleus Canina, known as the ''scaredy cat'' plant'. It's reputed to deter cats since they don't like the smell of the leaves, but many report no success with it. Available in early summer at bigger garden centres. It's not at all hardy, and the slightest touch of frost will kill it off.
I use liberal amounts of ground white pepper....tonnes of the stuff! You also have to remove their scent from the area....not a nice job as it stinks! Wherever they foul you should clear up ASAP and wash the area with diluted bleach.....I had the same problem and even bought a sonic cat scarer....it did not work and cost me 40....I throw water over the cat when I do see it and this kind of helps....its an ongoing issue though and you have to stick to the cleaning and pepper routine! Pepper is actually cheaper than all the fancy specialist gel you can buy, that stinks and generally has little effect! My garden Centre suggested a shotgun........!!
