I have lots of towels from Primark, which have now gone rather rough and I want to buy some new ones. Is it false economy to buy cheaper towels, do they all go hard over a couple of years? I always use conditioner etc. by the way, I think they are just getting old and I wash them a lot.

Whatever anyone else does, I'll keep using conditioner and tumble drying our towels, because they feel lovely and soft, so I doubt i've been doing much wrong.
Same here ice.maiden.
Nothing worse than using one that feels like cardboard scraping on your skin.
maybe there's something wrong with me 'cus i can't STAND a fluffy soft towel!
Give me a thin, rough one any day!
When my mum's go a bit tatty and lose their softness, she gives them to me!
You're right Ice! I shouldn't say this, but one of my dear friends has never had a tumble dryer & uses a clothes horse/airer. Her towels are always spotlessly clean, but its literally like drying your hands on sand paper, bless her!.
You're not the only one crisgal. I've also known people who prefer a rough towel - but it's not for me.

Smudge - even worse, is when folk dry them over radiators. I've seen them taken off, still with the shape of where they've been folded over them!! : )

Thanks for some entertaining answers! I will wash them all again now with no conditioner, put on the line until almost-dry and then put in the dryer. If it still doesn't work ... I am off to Harrods Sale (joke) ....
oh send your towels to me smurfchops, I love a bit of rough ;o) I've cut down on using softener, just a little with some items, & there's no difference to my washing.

lol @ Lottie's dog towels on the line...I'm amazed the neighbour's haven't had a whip round for me when it's doggy blanket, bed & towels day.

Because of my husbands allergies, we cant use fabric conditioner at all - The only thing I miss is the smell - we also have to use unperfumed washing powder, so my laundry smells of nothing :o(

Robina you are very welcome to them, but I think postage would cost an arm and a leg ...
annie, I love washing that smells of fresh air or nothing. I particular choose detergents and softeners that have no smell.

I can always remember the horrible overpowering smell of bold. It may well have changed now.
lol Ice.Maiden - cardboard looking clothes, he, he!
loftie - you are right about the fresh air smell, unfortunately at this time of year the opportunities for drying outdoors are very limited! So at the moment the washing smells of the spare room - I only ever use the tumble drier to finish things off - it must be the scot in me.
oh never mind then smurfchops! :o)
Just a thought, if you decide to throw out any towels your local animal shelter or RSPCA might be glad of them.
I've never owned a tumble drier (& I doubt I'll bother unless I move to a flat) but my wincyettes & themals are as soft as they ever were! :o)
Annie, I use my tumbler to finish things off too - and I'm not a Scot! (just aware of how much it costs to tumble dry!!).
Not bad Robinia, seeing as your thermals all date from the 1950's!!
oh no Lottie, they're much earlier, they were hand me downs! They built things to last in those days, and there's years left in them yet before they become dusters :o)
I wouldn't feel right drying my arse on a harrods towel

ooo la la
I'm not a Scot either, but my siser-in-law is & she uses her tumble drier all the time! Mind you, it's not her paying the electric bills, my brother is! ;o}
Why wouldn't it feel right drying your rear end on a Harrod's towel what...the?

I'm sure Fayed does & he's no superior than us, although he might think he is! ;o}
