Lay a sheet of Linoleum
6 Answers
I want to lay a complete sheet of linoleum in the bathroom. Fortunately the area to be covered is not too complicated - around the the bottom of the toilet bowl and two pipes coming down from the radiator is where cuttings would have to be made - the wooden floor seems to be flat and in a good state. I was thinking about using the existing carpet as a template. As I have never laid linoleum before any tips would be appreciated.

Mistakes cannot be corrected, and you could end up with a result that will look cheap and shoddy. Carpet is too easily stretched to provide an exact enough template - even lifting it from the floor will alter its shape. Linoleum is not the cheapest floor covering, and it would be well worth it in the end to have it laid professionally. Some form of underlay is also adviseable for loose-laid linoleum.
My husband laid sheets of newspaper so it was easily cut to the shapes he wanted , then stuck the sheets together with cellotape. Got just the right shapes then laid it on the linoleum. If you are going to cut on the wrong side of it, don't forget to turn the shape back to front. Cut on the right side and hey presto, fits. You do have to make sure the paper fits the whole of the room, so the edges are square.
Its so much cheaper and you will be pleased with yourself.

He used the two sided carpet tape, if you cut strips near to the toilet shape, then get the edges level, take care not to thump it down, cause it sticks well. Needs two of you as one hold the stuff up while Sir does the hard job of cutting strips and putting them at intervals on the linoleum or the floor. Whichever is easier. The little woman has to be careful to keep the piece level as well. Lots of laughter and strange grunts from Sir if not doing my job properly. Hope this helps.
