Question 1: I have a UK 6 digit meter showing consumption in cubic feet. Does anybody know what the fist 4 digits show - is it 100's of cubic feet, or single units - or some other?

Question 2:
Assuming average calorific values - does anybody know how to convert cubic feet into KWh

Thanks

It varies slightly according to region. You will find it written on your bill somewhere, but 100 cubic feet is approximately 30kWh.

Thats great - thanks. Can you enlighten me on the meter reading part of the question?

Don't have gas any more so can't check. One Unit in gas bill terms is 100 cubic feet. The meter in the old house had 4 digits not 6 - that's why I didn't answer that bit of the question. If you've got gas CH you're going to be using 700-1000 units per year. Surely that enables you to work out where the decimal point lies in the cubic feet readings.
Our supplier and apparently others use the following calculation:
hcf of gas units used ..................... ?
to convert to cubic metres................. x 2.83
multiply by conversion factor ........... .x 1.02264
multiply by calorific value....................x 39.3
convert into kilowatt-hours.......divide by 3.6
Result gives kWh used.

It does work if you have the patience to work it out.
Hmm
(2.83 x 1.02264 x 39.3)/3.6 = 31.5936106

I prefer an easy life. Stick with 'approximately 30'.
