Key Crisis!

I'm having to get a key cut for my flatmate and when I took it to Timpsons they said they couldn't do it because it's a "security key". They advised me to take it to a Locksmith which I did and the guy there also send me away because he wouldn't do it until I had substantial proof tthat I belonged to the house I was getting the key cut for. What is my next step? What do I need to take to a locksmith? I own the flat that I'm trying to get another key for. And on another issue the reason my flatmate needs another key is because half of it is stuck in the main door of the block of flats we stay in. Is the repair covered in the factoring and buildings insurance i pay? Just really confused.

just take the documents with you to prove you own the flat. we Rent, and our land lady had to get our spare key cut as it was a security key.

If you have a security key you should have a code that you were given, when the lock was fitted...if you have'nt got the code, nobody should cut you a spare key...
Basically it stops anyone from copying your key ...

Suppose you will need to change the cylinder in the door if you have'nt got the code...

When I get a key that is snapped off in the lock...I use a small pair of sharp nosed pliers to pull it out...or sometimes a coping saw blade will do to start to draw it out...then finish it off with pliers.

Check your buildings insurance...it often covers lost keys and the replacement of locks and cylinders.
Security keys are usually used in better quality locks..that in turn means more money...

Photo ID such as passport or driving licence and a utility bill showing the address would normally suffice. Most locksmiths will then have some sort of form to fill in.

Normally your excess payment would be as much, or more than, a locksmith call out.

If they only want proof of your address take a council tax bill or mortgage statement. Failing that just buy a new lock with spare keys with it, they can cost as little as £10 or aout £30- £40 for a high security one.
