We bought a Bosch electric shredder after having it recommended to us. You can get them off Amazon, but they may be cheaper elsewhere.

It just does its job without any fuss and quietly too compared with other shredders. So long as the branch fits within the opening in the top it just swallows it up and spits it out the bottom. Very Impressive, not cheap though. It works so well that you find yourself looking for more stuff to feed through it and it doesn't deafen you either.
I'm pretty happy with mine, which is now about 10 months old. It is called a Sovereign Silent Shredder, it came from Homebase. It is made in Germany, which is what attracted me to it (none of this PRC or Eastern Europe nonsense).
It has a 2000W motor, claims to take material up to 40mm. But this merely means the jaws are capable of taking it - mine jammed with oak twigs of around 25mm, but I'm had thicker lumps of apple-tree through it.
It will take soft stuff - laurel stalks complete with leaves, for example. There's a nack to avoiding it gumming up when you put soft stuff through.
Paid about 120 for it.

Thanks Twenty20 and buildersmate; you have given me something to think about.

I am inclined to the view that far eastern equipment should be avoided; although it does sometimes become difficult when long established U.K. firm are no longer producing in this country but rely on a manufacturers name and are importing from places such as China and Taiwan........Ron
