Bricking up side/back door

My husband wants to brick up the side entrance door in our house which would mean we could have a run of units in our kitchen and therefore more room in our kitchen. He says we never use that door, which is basically true, but I am worried - I think it should be kept as a fire exit, or I worry that it will reduce the value of our house, as people might expect there to be a door there. We do have another door at the back, leading off the lounge. Would we be alright to brick it up, or not?

The neighbours opposite have done the exact same thing. They use their patio doors in the dining room as the exit/entrance to the back garden. I prefer a back door myself, for going in & out on rainy days, etc.

It would be feasible. You may have to get building control involved, who will tell you what the fire regulations are etc. I can't comment on whether it would reduce the value of the house.

I agree with smudge - think about the mud all over the carpet in the lounge before getting carried away.
I live in a 3 bed semi and the design is the door is on the side of the house, but I also have a patio door at the back. My garden is fenced off and the gate kept locked as I have dogs. The side door can be a nuisance as my cars have to be parked tight up to the boundary to allow people (including the postman) access to it. The only way around it would be to have a porch built on the front of the house so I have a front door. You do not say if you have a front door cooljool.
