High reach windows

When I had double glazing fitted, the top half of the windows opened outwards (so that you had an escape route in case of fire I was told!). However, especially in the kitchen where the sink and appliances are in front of the window I cannot reach the handles to lift them to open the window.
Does anyone know where I can get a long tool to lift the handles - I have seen one on a disability site for wheelchair users, but I cannot find this site any more.
I would be grateful for any suggestions of where to get one, or what the tool is called.

No idea where to get the tool but you were sold a dummy over the opening outwards business.
It has never been part of Building Regulations that escape from the ground or first floor needs to be effected through the windows (in a normal domestic dwelling).
It used to be true that an escape route was required from the second floor, but it would not satisfy the Regulations to have it through the top of the window - one would never climb through there before the flames were licking around your arris.

I use the type of gripper that you use to lift cans off a shelf & a length of dowling ( or a long feather duster cane handle) to push the lock in the window handle.I find it quite effective. Ron.
