The gardening websites say not to pick rhubarb during its first year. What would happen to the plant if the thought of a rhubarb and ginger crumble made your will-power fail and you did pick some?

Better to borrow, buy or snitch by the light of the moon some of your neighbor's if you want any for future years. The Rhubarb Compendium ( yes, there are such publications) says "...During the first year of planting, the stalks should not be picked, since food from the leaves is needed to nourish the roots for the next year's growth. One light picking may be taken during the year following planting if the plants are vigorous, and beginning the second year following planting, the entire plant may be harvested..." Concordia res parvae crescent seems appropriate at this point...

Thanks, Clanad. Hardly seems worth planting it if you can't eat it for about 3 years!! I'll have to make do with apple crumble instead.
Both Rhubarb with Ginger, and Apple Pie are nothing without Custard. Dig deeply & see if you can find a Custard well.
