Standard Cotoneaster in a pot

I have been given a standard cotoneaster and want to know if I can plant it in a large pot instead of planting it out in the garden? Hope someone can help.

This is a large tree eventually, and you can put it in a very large poy , but not forever.
Should be in a garden really.

don't put it in the garden the roots will go on forever and you'll never get rid of it as i have learnt by my mistake just give it away as a present in its pot.
