how do you stop the suckers coming from a lilac tree

Many trees don't like having their roots touched and if they do they create suckers. Don't plant round such trees because when you're weeding you'll obviously touch a root. HTH

Follow the root back to the main trunk and sever it off as close as possible, then paint the cut with a drop of tar or cellulose.
