Is there a way of stopping brown stains appearing on my lawn.
It must be somthing to do with my new puppy.

Get rid of the puppy. Voila!!
it's dog pee most likely - keep him off the lawn
You could cut the affected area out in a neat square & replace with a square where it's not so obvious. After that, keep a watering can handy to dilute it straight away.
It's his wee by the way that is burning the lawn! Dilute with plenty of water!
It's as Sachs says. The wee is over-fertilising the grass and killing it. By diluting it each time with a couple of bucketfulls of water, it'll help the grass grow, rather than killing it.
