hi. if a house was re wired in 2000 and was not earthed by the electrician , who now could we get to get the house earthed without having the house re wired and complying with the electricity laws.

Shouldn't be a problem as you're only carrying out work on an existing system, not installing a new one.

A system without an earth (or an inadequate earth) is definitely a problem and I don't think Heathfield means this.
You simply need to go to an electrician who is registered to undertake Part P Building Control work to come and check the system earth, and advise on what remedial work is required. All grey cable used in domestic installations is twin core and earth. I can't believe your 2000 installation does not use this type of cable - I suspect you mean the earthing terminations wasn't done properly. I doubt that it needs a complete rewiring.

You're right, BM - I could have perhaps phrased it better. While the lack of an earth is definitely a problem, having the work carried out shouldn't be.

thanks , yes the house has got the correct cable in ,the grey cable with the earth wire , for some reason the earth terminations were not done , will i now need an electrician to finish this off so that it can be passed by regulations.

Geez, that house is a potential death-trap until you get the work done.
Specifically it means that if a live connector insulation happened to chafe and touch the casing of a metal appliance, instead of blowing the fuse (or MCB), the appliance would remain live at 240V. If someone then touches the case, they would get an electric shock.
Whowever did that needs to be reported.
You are not serious that it has been like that for 9 years?
