Are wallflowers annuals or can they be left in the garden for a second year?

yes; they're part perrenial - can't spell that word.

I think that they are bi-annual. Grow over 2 seasons, then die off.

I think they are best in their second season, but hang around looking lanky and manky after that

Wallflowers are sown the winter, transplantedinto nurserie beds, and then into their flowering positions in the fall, and will bloom the next year. They are best pulled up then, but will make much poorer specimens if left in for a further year. The good thing is they will grow anywhere there`s a bit of soil. I have success with dry-stone walls.

I unitentionaly left one Wallflower plant in last season which has grown very bushy and is very healthy and standing almost three feet tall..It will be very interesting to see what the outcome will be...
