mail redirection

i'm moving house in less than a month for the first time ever, and i want to get our mail redirected to our new address. is it worth paying for 12 months do you think, or will 6 months about do it?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.6 months will probably do it if you discipline yourself to deal with redirected mail when it comes through. what i mean is, when you get a piece of mail with the redirected label on it, phone the sender yourself and change your details, cos mailing lists are nothing if not persistent and the post office forwarding your mail will not change any details on any mailing lists.
When I moved into my house, the previous owner redirected her mail for 6 months but left me with a number of sticky labels with her name and address on them, in case any came through after the redirect ran out.

I think a year is probably the best minimum date, especially if you have annual subscriptions to people like the AA, National Trust, magazine subscriptions which come by post, etc.
I think the idea of giving the new owner of your property some sticky labels for the forwarding of mail after your redirection service ends is a very good idea. There's always a risk of identity theft from misdirected mail so anything you can do to prevent this is worthwhile.
