Most garden centres will give you advice on pool liners but it depends what sort of pool you are constructing. If it's a fishpond then a soft soil with a good couple of inches of silica (or other fine) sand covered with a thick polymer liner sheet would be aequate. Make sure you buy enough polymer to do the lining plus 12 inches around the perimeter. Also ensure that the lining is slack enough to allow for a bit of sinkage when the water goes in.
