On top of the "photograph" is a clear wear layer. The wear layer is made from a melamine resin and is resistant to wear. Howeve, the resin doesn't "polish" very well. The next step up from the laminates is "engineered wood" flooring (again, here in the U.S. This is actual, fairly thin sheets of real wood glued to and underlayment (someitmes several layers thick. It does shine when cleaned and polished according to the manufacturer's instructions...
