Hi chaps. I am the son in question and the job is now done. Here's what I did:
First I rented an 85kg ponceuse from Kilotou, and sanded the bits I could reach with that. This worked, but I ran out of time with the kit and was left with a ring of glue about 5cm wide around the walls.
To get rid of this, I first tried the blowlamp, but it was blackening the wood too much, so I went to plan B, the solvent, I got a paint stripper thing and tried that. It was pretty good but had a nasty habit of dissolving a little glue and spreading it in an impervious layer across the wood I had sanded, so I had to re-sand by hand.
Eventually I used a wire brush attachment for my drill and scraped it off with that. I then sanded the edges with my hand-held belt sander and voila!
Thanks for all of the great suggestions.
