Try "trust a tradesman"
There is another which is being run by The Sun, but that is asking for tradesmen to join and not necessarily a recommendation - I think, i've not checked this one out

Builders pay these websites so they can advertise on them. Doesn't mean they are good builders. Get recommended by a friend/neighbour, or if you see workmen nearby, knock on the door when they have gone, and ask how good the builder is. Always get an estimate in writing and never give money up front, especially last payment, before work is completed.
Spot on smurfchops, we once though we would stand out from the 'crowd' by having a trade logo, the vetting turned out to be minimal and the main criteria was that you paid the annual fee. One year was enough.
There is a Federation for Builders, just the same. They take your money so you get the logo, but you don't get any work out of it.
