Rawlplug Rawlbolts

I have a number of Rawlplug Rawlbolts that are the same size as the illustration here:

Can someone tell me how I calculate the size of the hole in the brick wall I need to insert the bolt shield? Can I assume that it's the same as the diameter of the shield itself? How long does the hole need to be?

If it's like the one in the link then the bolt will tell you, the one in the link is an M6 drill.
The hole has to be big enough to get the thing in, if there's no marking to say then use the blunt end of the bit and offer it up to the plug's widest point, that should do it.
If it doesn't work, never mind, maybe the Swiss cheese look will be in next year.

Same as the shield or the cone nut. Sometimes marked on shank.
Drill hole the same total length as bolt, then you will be safe.
Make sure hole is cleared out, or rawlbolt can jam and you then cannot remove easily.
Do not overtighten .. you can crack a brick easily with these.

123everton, i don't understand. I have a rawlbolt marked M8 in my hand. The bolt has a diameter of 8mm in this case with the shield having a diameter of about 15mm. Surely, if the same applies to a M6 rawlbolt, the shield cannot be 6mm as that has to be the diameter of the bolt and not the shield?

Try an m8 drill in piece of wood (use a wood drill) pop it in, use a bigger one till it fits, sorted.

AlBags, on the M8 Rawlbult, the conenut has a diameter of 14mm. If this is the diameter for an M8 conenut, I take it I only need to measure the conenut on an M6 rawlbolt to get the right size drill for that?

Everton was wrong. I wish sometimes people would understand Engineering terminology before posting.
M6, M8, whatever is the bolt thread size.
The cone nut HAS to fit in the hole, so measure it and drill that size. The hole in masonry will be a bit larger (which is what you want to get the thing in) Correct drill bit size for M6 will be 14mm.
I have fitted loads .. and I hope you saw the warning about it getting stuck!
