light blue flares

I have a pair of light blue flares which are naff now. Should I fold them up on the inside and sew them up so they are about knee length shorts? If they come back into fashion I can undo the stitching and wear them as flares.

What do you think?

They'd be really bulky, molly, if you fold them up inside - you'd have loads of fabric to dispose of. The flare would have to be pleated up inside - I think it would be very uncomfortable. Either chop 'em off, or give them to a charity shop, or sell them on eBay - some people still like flares!

I think they'll look a bit lumpy if you fold them up inside. just chop the legs off for shorts.

It's sewing and I didn't know where else to put it.

hhmmm I was trying to avoid chopping them, so I could undo them if they became fashionable, I don't know where the flare starts so they might look odd.

Try them on inside out and draw a line where you would cut them off. Or get your mum to do it for you. Leave enough material for the hem or turn-up 1 1/2". Or leave them to go frayed at the edges.

hhmmm I might leave them scruffy, I need a scruffy looking pair of jeans for geography in September, to annoy my pudding of a teacher who thinks the 6th formers should wear suits.

Unstitch the sides up to the knee and insert tartan triangles and restart a fashion not seen since the late 70s. Bye bye baby and all that!

Put elastic in the hems and turn them into harem pants, all the rage - or start a new fashion if it's not reached you yet!

It is a nightmare unstitching trousers. You will always be left with a visible line when they are taken down.

The amount of time needed to come back into fashion means that if you wore them as shorts they would ware out before they cam back in.

Cut them off and make good use of them as shorts now and don't worry about retro fashion. There is often a twist to retro anyway.

Ok i'll cut them. I'll do it a bit at a time so i can do them as long as possible, as close to where they start to flare as possible.

Wear them and be damned. Anything goes these days. Just walk with a confident smile and nobody will worry in the least what you're wearing.

You've never struck me as someone who is lacking in self-confidence. So forget about what anyone else might say about your clothing. If they comment, just tell them that it's the latest fashion. That way you'll be starting the trends, not following them ;-)

Anyone, as any Sea Scout should know, flares should only ever be used in an emergency!

Chop into bermudas (below knee). Undo side seams & thread wide tartan satin ribbon as per zig-zag laces, ending with a big bows & long trailing tails.
