Advice on killing moss in a flower bed
4 Answers
Can anyone advise me if there is any product I can use to kill moss in a flowerbed without killing all the plants. I made a new flower bed last year in a very mossy lawn (just moved house so no time to kill the moss in the lawn as I wanted to move favourite plants) Now I am suffering from the moss continually growing everywhere. I do live in a damp area which does not help, but I find the moss very unsightly and would love to eradicate it.

Treat it with weed and feed twice a year and use an Autmn dressing it keep it down in winter.
Also consider getting the lawn aerated to help the drainage. Moss loves damp lawns

Ferrous sulphate is the active ingredient in a lot of lawn mosskillers which are overpriced but If you buy just plain ferrous sulphate it is very cheap and works just as well. You can sprinkle the crysals on the moss and then spray lightly with water or dissolve about half a mug of crysals in a gallon of water and sprinkle or spray onto the moss. Some precautions .. If you leave the solution unused it will oxidise and form a brown precipitate which can clog fine nozzles so make up just enough and use it all immediately. If the solution gets on the leaves of plants it will kill the leaves. The plant will probably recover so be a bit careful. If the solution gets on clothes or concrete it will leave a rusty stain that is almost impossible to remove from concrete. You can remove it from clothes with citric acid dissolved in distilled water or rainwater or water from a dehumidifier.
