I have tried to remove paint from a wooden bannister which has at least two layers of paint.
I have tried a sanding machine and wet and dry paper manually with little effect.
Anyone know if there are any alternative methods of removing the paint perhaps some kind of liquid?
I intend to varnish the wood after the paint has been removed.

I'd buy a new bannister.........
try paint remover...seriousl...it works
Only two coats!! Paint stripper will walk through that, Nitromors is by far the best, you will be well advised to read the the instructions on the tin, you will probably also need wire wool and white spirit.

Good luck.
paint stripper. Also a heat gun they are brilliant, I stripped my window with one of those and must have had about 8 layers of paint on.
Nitromors,as has been recommended but be careful. It's very strong stuff. Works a treat though!
We did our a few years ago looks lovely but never again! We used Nitromors, wire wool, and a heat gun - takes forever and it'll stink the whole house out but well worth it!
If you are going to stain it afterwoods I recommend Briwax
Try nitromours this will take most paint or vanish off but you'll have to give it a good sanding after . or you could burn it off with a blowtorch or hotgun (bit like a hairdryier but hotter)
with heat gun it just peels off
I used a gel paint stripper from Focus, you leave it on a while, it bubbles up and you scrape it off - no mess - good stuff - can't remember the name of it.
